Artist’s Statement

After graduating from the National Art School (East Sydney Technical College) in 1980 I began my art career as a Ceramicist producing production ware while experimenting with the sculptural possibilities of clay and kiln-fired glass.

I transitioned from the large, gas fired kiln I built in 1976 to the construction of a bronze furnace. A further year, in 1985, at the National Art School concentrating on bronze foundry techniques advanced my knowledge of not only foundry practices but also started a life long love of experimenting with alternative materials and sculptural interests.

My early sculptural practice was mostly focused around the figure, portraying the human form in stylised or abstract forms often two metres tall. Over the years I have explored various themes including contemporary fashion and flat, cutout figures for an installation, Sydney Real Estate Scramble, Sculpture by the Sea, 2007.

Although I occasionally return to figurative sculpture, my work has become increasingly nature and installation based. Over the last decade I have been creating installations inspired by my intense viewing of nature from my easy access to coastal, harbour and bush walks
