Leap Into Extinction

Rheobatrachus Silus discovered in 1972 and extinct by 1993.

Resin frog with sandstone base by Jan Shaw.
Steel frog with sandstone base by Jan Shaw.

This unique species found in two mountain ranges in Queensland did not eat while gestating its eggs for six weeks in its stomach then gave birth to fully formed baby frogs. Growing to a maximum of 54mm it was the only land vertebrate animal including amphibian, reptile, mammal or bird to rear its young inside its stomach. With a third of frog species at risk are they the canary in the mine signalling our extinction?
